LODGE INFORMATION AND ITINERARY

INFORMATION

Accommodation: The lodge can accommodate up to 12 guests in 3 guest cabins.  The oldest cabin has a small common area with wood burning stove and 2 separate bedrooms; one with 1 queen size bed and the other one with 1 queen size bed and 2 sets of bunk beds.  The other 2 cabins are one-room cabins and are best suited for 2 adults (each has 1 queen size bed).  One of the 2 cabins has a very small single bed (best suited for one child).  All cabins are very tastefully furnished and decorated and give a little rustic yet very comfortable feeling, surrounded by amazing nature.  Each cabin has a private bath with flush toilet and simple shower.

Meals: The lodge chefs prepare delicious 3-course dinners from fresh ingredients.  Breakfast is eggs or French toast, giving a good start for the day's activities.  Lunch is a lighter meal, often soup/salad and a small sandwich.  Fresh baked goodies are available throughtout the day.  Special dietary needs can only be accommodated with advance notice.

Activities:  Bear viewing, especially in July, is the main activity for guests.  Besides bears, other wildlife can be spotted in the area including bald eagles and harbor seals.  Guests explore the area by boat or skiff primarily.  Kayaks are available for guest use.  Fishing is also offered.  All activites are guided.

A helicopter will be positioned to offer guests even more activity options.  Great hiking opportunities and more amazing scenery is waiting for guests - helicopter tours are optional and at additonal charge.

ITINERARY

Day 1/Arrival: Transfer on your own from your Anchorage hotel to the Lake Hood seaplane base. Enjoy a scenic one-hour flight to the foothills of the Aleutian Range. Depart by boat on a guided bear viewing tour.  This is a good chance for up-close viewing and photography.  Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight at Redoubt Bay Lodge

Day 2/Departure: Depending on your return flight: enjoy free time for a kayaking tour or early morning bear viewing. Return to Anchorage at approx. the same time you arrived.

If you stay longer: guided activities such as kayaking, fishing, exploring by boat for wildlife, or more bear viewing are included.

TRAVEL TO ALASKA:

Please make sure you have your proper documents (US Drivers License or passport) with you, your credit card and camera/video recorder.

If you booked a rental car with us that you will pick up upon arrival in Alaska, please make sure you provide us with your flight arrival information so that your car is ready for you when you arrive!

Also remember that Alaska has its own time zone. Alaska is 1 hour behind Pacific Standard Time / 2 hours behind Mountain Standard Time / 3 hours behind Central Standard Time / 4 hours behind Eastern Standard Time.

WHAT TO PACK:

Temperatures from June through August range between 60°F / 16° C to 80°F / 27°. May and September are typically cooler, with temperatures ranging between 45°F / 7° C to 55°F / 13° C. Temperatures in the winter can range from -40 degrees to 40 degrees.

If summer or winter the general rule for Alaska is casual, comfortable clothing that can be worn in layers. The first layer should be something thin and next to the skin (try to avoid cotton). The second layer adds warmth and allows you the option of removing if it gets warmer (mostly fleece or similar). The third layer should protect you against rain and wind if necessary.

For day cruises into Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park, for example, we recommend an extra layer including a scarf, hat and gloves, as it can be chilly on the boats - even in the summer!

Comfortable walking shoes or water repellent hiking boots are also important.

If you visit in the winter, your outer layer should protect you against the cold and wind. Even so jeans are comfortable, they are not ideal when it is really cold. Ski pants are protecting better against the cold weather. Do not forget to bring a warm scarf, hat, gloves, and boots.
