This is a journey through Alaska's rich history, varied native cultures and lifestyles. From the majestic waters of Prince William Sound to Alaska's great interior region, this tour moves at a relaxed pace and includes many major Alaskan highlights. In just seven days you will travel the most of Alaska Railroad system, experience Alaska's scenic glaciers and shoreline, view wildlife in Denali National Park, and cruise on a classic sternwheeler in Fairbanks.

Anchorage Arrival
Anchorage Arrival Arrive in Anchorage at any time. Transfer to your hotel by courtesy shuttle or taxi. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city, nestled between the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet. Offering an abundance of shopping, cultural attractions, and gourmet Alaskan restaurants, Anchorage provides an excellent start to your Alaskan vacation. Overnight in Anchorage.

Glacier Cruising in Prince William Sound
Glacier Cruising in Prince William Sound Transfer to the rail station by hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi. At 9:45am depart on a scenic train ride, past Beluga Point and along Cook Inlet to Whittier. The spectacular scenery is a highlight and represents all that makes Alaska famous. On arrival in Whittier (11:50pm), walk to the small boat harbor and board a high-speed catamaran for your cruise through Prince William Sound. Watch for sea otters, whales and birds as you travel through glacier-filled College and Harrimann Fjords. A stop will be made in front of the glaciers for the chance to witness large chunks of the glacier fall into the water (known as glacier calving). A hot lunch is included while on board. Following the cruise, board the train and return to Anchorage at 6:45pm. Upon arrival in Anchorage at 9:15pm, transfer to your hotel by hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi. Overnight in Anchorage.

Anchorage to Denali National Park
Anchorage to Denali National Park This morning, transfer to the Anchorage train station by hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi. Travel aboard the Alaska Railroad to Denali National Park at 8:15am. Relax and enjoy the scenery through large picture windows. Upon arrival in Denali at 3:30pm, transfer to your hotel by courtesy shuttle. The afternoon is free for an optional tour like a jeep safari (not included - see Add On Tours). Overnight near the Denali park entrance.

Denali National Park
Denali National Park Early this morning (between 5:30am and 7am), depart on a bus tour of Denali National Park. This 6- to 8-hour tour takes you approximately 55 miles into the Park. As you travel through the pristine wilderness, your experienced driver / guide will provide an overview of the land and its wildlife. Along the way, stops will be made for viewing wildlife, such as bears and moose, and taking photographs. A snack box and water are included. The afternoon is at your leisure. This evening, we recommend the delicious salmon dinner and amusing stories of the Cabin Nite Dinner Theatre show (not included - see Add On Tours). Overnight near the Denali park entrance.

Denali to Fairbanks
Denali to Fairbanks The morning is free to enjoy an optional tour such as whitewater rafting or helicopter sightseeing (not included). Or just relax at your hotel. This afternoon, a transfer to the train station via hotel courtesy shuttle. At 3:45pm, depart on the train to Fairbanks. Upon arrival in Fairbanks at 8pm, transfer to your hotel via courtesy shuttle or on your own. Overnight in Fairbanks.

Fairbanks to Anchorage
Fairbanks to Anchorage At 8:45am (or 2pm), depart on a 3.5-hour cruise of the Chena and Tanana Rivers aboard the only authentic sternwheeler riverboat operating in Alaska. This narrated tour provides background on the area's natural history and the Athabascan Native culture. You will see a trapper's cabin, log homes, a bush pilot performance, and a championship sled dog team. A stop will be made at the historic site of a Chena Indian village to learn about Native Alaskan hunting and fishing techniques. This afternoon or evening (depending on what time you return from the sternwheeler cruise) you will depart Fairbanks for Anchorage on a scheduled flight (55 minutes). On arrival in Anchorage, transfer to your hotel via courtesy shuttle or taxi. Overnight in Anchorage.

Denali Jeep Backcountry Safari from Denali 
 
 Denali Jeep Backcountry Safari from Denali Take the wheel and follow your guide on a spectacular off-road journey on the Stampede trail/road outside of Healy. After the first few miles, the Stampede Road changes from pavement to very primitive gravel roadway with plenty of bumps, dips and sways. Your Jeep Wrangler® carries four guests. There will be several stops to switch drivers, so everyone can enjoy the thrill of maneuvering along this wilderness road. Interactive two-way radios allow your guide to interpret the area. You will stop for a break at a wilderness camp where you can enjoy a small "wilderness" cooked meal. Tour includes transfers in Denali and cooked meal.

Note: Driver's must be at least 25 years of age and have a valid driver's license. Children under 5 years of age are not allowed on this tour. Children 5-12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

TRAVEL TO ALASKA:

Please make sure you have your proper documents (US Drivers License or passport) with you, your credit card and camera/video recorder.

If you booked a rental car with us that you will pick up upon arrival in Alaska, please make sure you provide us with your flight arrival information so that your car is ready for you when you arrive!

Also remember that Alaska has its own time zone. Alaska is 1 hour behind Pacific Standard Time / 2 hours behind Mountain Standard Time / 3 hours behind Central Standard Time / 4 hours behind Eastern Standard Time.

 

WHAT TO PACK:

Temperatures from June through August range between 60°F / 16° C to 80°F / 27°. May and September are typically cooler, with temperatures ranging between 45°F / 7° C to 55°F / 13° C. Temperatures in the winter can range from -40 degrees to 40 degrees.

If summer or winter the general rule for Alaska is casual, comfortable clothing that can be worn in layers. The first layer should be something thin and next to the skin (try to avoid cotton). The second layer adds warmth and allows you the option of removing if it gets warmer (mostly fleece or similar). The third layer should protect you against rain and wind if necessary.

For day cruises into Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park, for example, we recommend an extra layer including a scarf, hat and gloves, as it can be chilly on the boats - even in the summer!

Comfortable walking shoes or water repellent hiking boots are also important. 

If you visit in the winter, your outer layer should protect you against the cold and wind. Even so jeans are comfortable, they are not ideal when it is really cold. Ski pants are protecting better against the cold weather. Do not forget to bring a warm scarf, hat, gloves, and boots.
