About AnchorageVisit Anchorage, Alaska's Largest City

Anchorage is Alaska's largest city, with nearly half of the entire state population residing here! Located on the shore of Cook Inlet and surrounded by mountains and wilderness, Anchorage is a unique combination of a wilderness and modern city life. Within just a few minutes from downtown, you can be in a alone in a forest or hiking a mountain and spotting wildlife such as moose and bald eagles!

Though it is a young city by most standards - it was founded in 1915 - Anchorage has a rich and fascinating history. Anchorage began as a tent city to house Alaska Railroad workers. Soon, entrepreneurs flocked to the area to provide services to the railroad workers, their families and others immigrants to the area. The city grew and was finally incorporated in 1920. The next big event was the Good Friday Earthquake which occurred on March 27, 1964. The earthquake was the largest ever recorded in North America, registering 9.2 on the Richter Scale. Anchorage was only 80 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake, resulting in millions of dollars of damage to the city. A photo display in the Sunshine Plaza on 4th Avenue depicts the damage to Anchorage and other communities in south-central Alaska. Thanks to a beautification program begun in the 1980s, Anchorage is now surrounded by hundreds of miles of trails and dotted with attractive parks.

With a wide selection of hotels, restaurants, and activities, Anchorage is the starting point for most Alaska visits. It is the main transportation hub for the state with the majority of international and domestic flights arriving here. Lake Hood, located near the airport, is the largest sea plane airport in the world; it is also the departure point for several of our flight seeing tours.

From Broadway shows and gourmet meals to a bicycle ride along Cook Inlet, Anchorage truly offers something for everyone!

The offices of Alaskatours.com are situated in the heart of downtown Anchorage. Check out our office location on 4th Avenue and G St. on the Alaska Cam!
