Known
by many as the "the Great Land", Alaska constitutes
a virtual subcontinent with seventeen national
parks. A visit to any of these parks offers the
opportunity to see wildlife, experience seemingly
endless wilderness, and to learn about Alaska's
natural and cultural history.
Our Alaska's National Park Tour takes you into the
heart of 5 of Alaska's most fascinating national
parks, all of which provide unique experiences to
some of the most remote and wild lands left on
earth! Enjoy scenic drives along the
Seward Highway to visit Kenai Fjords
National Park and the Glenn Highway to Wrangell St.
Elias National Park. Cross the Arctic Circle and fly
to Gates of the Arctic National Park to learn about
the
unique lifestyle of the last remaining settlement of
the Nunamiut (inland northern Inupiat Eskimo).
Travel on the
Alaska Railroad to Denali National Park and the
remote Kantishna area. View bears in their natural
habitat at Katmai National Park, famous for Brooks
Falls.
Upon arrival in
Anchorage, transfer via hotel courtesy shuttle or
taxi to your hotel. Depending on when you arrive,
you may have time for an optional excursion, such as
Flightseeing
(not included). Overnight
in Anchorage.
Day 2:
Anchorage to Seward / 127 miles
Plan 3 hours driving
time, not including stops.
Pick up your rental car from the downtown rental
station this morning. Your drive to Seward takes you
along scenic Cook Inlet and Turnagain Arm.
Few roads in the United States can
offer the diversity of scenic landscapes and unique
natural features so concentrated in one area. Wildflowers and waterfalls
brighten every corner of the road as it glides below
rough mountains that pierce thick, heavy clouds.
Recommended stops along the route include the
Begich-Boggs Visitor Center and the Alaska Wildlife
Conservation Center. Just before you reach Seward,
you have a chance to visit Exit Glacier. This
is one of the few glaciers that visitor's can walk
to. The interpretive trail leading to the glacier
provides an illustrated history of the glaciers path
as it has receded over the last 100 years. Overnight in Seward.
Day
3: Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise
At 11:45am, depart on a full-day cruise into
Kenai Fjords National Park, one of Alaska's
treasures. As you cruise through the park and
the Chiswell Islands National Wildlife Refuge,
watch for Stellar sea lions, harbor seals,
puffins, eagles and even whales. During the
cruise, you will see examples of Alpine, Cirque,
Piedmont and Tidewater glaciers. A stop will be
made at either Holgate or Aialik Glacier to
witness glacier calving - when large ice chunks
fall off the glacier. Enjoy an all-you-can-eat
salmon and prime rib buffet on-board. In the
evening return to the Seward harbor. Relax in
the evening and enjoy the fresh Alaskan air.
Overnight in Seward.
Day 4: Seward to Glennallen/Copper Center
/ 304 miles
Plan
6 hours driving time, not including stops.
Today you will travel
back up the Seward Highway, through the lush
Matanuska Valley, an onto the
breathtaking Glenn Highway. This is one of the
oldest and most scenic highways in Alaska. The
Glenn, as it is known by locals, follows the
Matanuska River up to its beginning at the Matanuska
Glacier. Along the way, there are opportunities for
guided glacier hikes and river rafting. This is a perfect day
to plan a picnic! Overnight in Sheep Mountain or Glennallen / Copper
Center Area.
Day 5:
Glennallen/Copper Center to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
/ 68 miles
Plan 1.5 hours driving
time, not including stops, plus 30 minute flight
from Chitina to McCarthy.
Start the day with a short drive to the small town of Chitina, where
you will leave your rental car and board a bush
plane for the scenic flight into Wrangell-St. Elias
National Park. At 13.2 million acres, Wrangell-St.
Elias is the largest national park in
the United States and equivalent
in size to the country of Switzerland! This
tremendous park includes four mountain ranges, nine
of the country's 16 highest peaks, and extensive
ice fields. Your final destination is the
spectacular Kennicott mines overlooking the
Kennicott Glacier. Overnight at the Kennicott Glacier
Lodge.
Day 6:
Kennicott / Wrangell St. Elias National Park
Take a step back in time today on a 2.5 hour
historical tour of Kennecott. Your guide will take
you inside the 14 story Mill Building of the
Kennecott Copper Corporation, which was built in the
early 1900s. Catch a glimpse of what it was like to
live and work in this remote wilderness, while
hearing tales of lucky fortunes, tenacious
frontiersmen, and tragic endings. This afternoon,
you have plenty of time for an optional guided
glacier or alpine hiking tour (not included). Overnight
at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge.
Day 7:
Kennicott / Wrangell St. Elias National Park to
Fairbanks / 313 miles
30 minute flight from McCarthy to
Chitina, plus 6 hours driving time, not including
stops.
Today begins with a return flight to Chitina.
Your drive continues on the Richardson Highway, Alaska's oldest highway
which
began in 1898 as a gold rush trail to Eagle.
This
route follows the Alaska oil pipeline, one of the
world's greatest engineering feats. Along the way,
there are several rest stops, including historic
roadhouses and scenic viewpoints. Spend the
remainder of the day exploring the historic gold
mining town of Fairbanks, also known as Alaska's "Gateway to the
Arctic." We suggest a visit to the University
of Alaska Museum of the Arctic and the Musk Ox farm.
You have several options for gold panning and gold
mine tours such as the
El Dorado Gold Mine or the
Discover the Gold City Tour
(not included). Overnight in Fairbanks.
Day
8:
Dalton Highway,
Gates of the Arctic Nat’l Park & Anaktuvuk Pass
Travel far above the Arctic
Circle today on a memorable journey to Anaktuvuk
Pass.
Early this morning (approx. 5am), depart in a
comfortable mini coach for a ground tour from
Fairbanks across the Arctic Circle to Coldfoot. From
here, you will board a small plane for a flight into the heart
of the Brooks Range, the northern-most
mountains in North America. The plane will land within the Gates of the Arctic National Park at
the Nunamiut Eskimo village of Anaktuvuk Pass, nearly 100 miles
north of the Arctic Circle. Visit the village and
learn about the culture and lifestyle of the local
people. After your visit you will fly back to
Fairbanks, arriving at between 6pm or 7pm.
Return
your rental car at the airport this evening. Overnight in Fairbanks.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The excursion to Anaktuvuk Pass only
operates to approx. Aug 31, depending on weather
conditions. If you start this program after
Aug 24, you have the option to do a day excursion to
Barrow, the top of the world, for only $69
additional per person.
Barrow tour description:
Barrow is
the northernmost city in the United States, 330
miles north of the Arctic Circle. As Alaska's
largest Eskimo village, in Barrow knowledge of the
environment and animal behavior continues to be
essential for day-to-day survival. During the tour
witness ceremonies and traditions of the native
culture as you tour the Inupiat Heritage Center, a
National Park Service Affiliated Site. Take part in
local music and dances and learn about the
traditional blanket toss. Your tour includes a
chance to examine the tundra, search for hundreds of
bird species, view the ice of the Arctic Ocean and
walk on a beautiful sand beach as far north as
you’re ever likely to go. Throughout you will have
a chance to interact with local residents who
enthusiastically enjoy sharing their stories and
culture. Extra brave guests can join the most
prestigious Polar Bear Club in the world by choosing
to swim in the Arctic Ocean (optional).
Day 9:

Kantishna.
Your
experienced driver

fauna and flora of the park as well as stop for any
wildlife sightings. With some luck

Day 13:
Brooks Falls / Katmai National Park

Today take the
guided bus tour to the Valley of 10,000 Smokes.
Katmai was initially established in 1918 following
the cataclysmic eruption of Novarupta Volcano in
1912, a blast ten times more forceful than the 1980
eruption of Mount St. Helens. The eruption buried
more than 40 square miles with pumice and ash up to
700 feet deep. This area was named the Valley of
10,000 Smokes for the countless fumaroles that
continued to steam for many years. Today the Valley
is a geologic wonder containing active volcanoes and
breathtaking views of deep gorges topped by
multi-colored cliffs of volcanic ash. Overnight
at Brooks Lodge.
Day
14: Brooks Camp to Anchorage
Spend the morning at Brooks Lodge
pursuing your own interests. You may want to take
another hike to Brooks Falls, take a few last
wildlife photos or visit the "Trading Post" where
souvenirs may be purchased. Your return flight to
King Salmon will depart early this afternoon
(usually after lunch). You arrive back in Anchorage
at approximately 4:30 pm. Transfer to your hotel via
hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi. The evening is at
your leisure. Overnight
in Anchorage.
Day
