A visit to any of these parks offers the opportunity to see wildlife, experience seemingly endless wilderness, and to learn about Alaska's natural and cultural history.

Our Alaska's National Park Tour takes you into the heart of 5 of Alaska's most fascinating national parks, all of which provide unique experiences to some of the most remote and wild lands left on earth! Enjoy scenic drives along the Seward Highway to visit Kenai Fjords National Park and the Glenn Highway to Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Cross the Arctic Circle and fly to Gates of the Arctic National Park to learn about the unique lifestyle of the last remaining settlement of the Nunamiut (inland northern Inupiat Eskimo). Travel on the Alaska Railroad to Denali National Park and the remote Kantishna area. View bears in their natural habitat at Katmai National Park, famous for Brooks Falls.

Day 1:  Arrival Anchorage

Upon arrival in Anchorage, transfer via hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi to your hotel. Depending on when you arrive, you may have time for an optional excursion, such as Flightseeing (not included). Overnight in Anchorage.

 

Day 2:  Anchorage to Seward / 127 miles

Plan 3 hours driving time, not including stops.

Pick up your rental car from the downtown rental station this morning. Your drive to Seward takes you along scenic Cook Inlet and Turnagain Arm. Few roads in the United States can offer the diversity of scenic landscapes and unique natural features so concentrated in one area. Wildflowers and waterfalls brighten every corner of the road as it glides below rough mountains that pierce thick, heavy clouds. Recommended stops along the route include the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Just before you reach Seward, you have a chance to visit Exit Glacier. This is one of the few glaciers that visitor's can walk to. The interpretive trail leading to the glacier provides an illustrated history of the glaciers path as it has receded over the last 100 years. Day 3:  Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise

At 11:45am, depart on a full-day cruise into Kenai Fjords National Park, one of Alaska's treasures. As you cruise through the park and the Chiswell Islands National Wildlife Refuge, watch for Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, puffins, eagles and even whales. During the cruise, you will see examples of Alpine, Cirque, Piedmont and Tidewater glaciers. A stop will be made at either Holgate or Aialik Glacier to witness glacier calving - when large ice chunks fall off the glacier. Enjoy an all-you-can-eat salmon and prime rib buffet on-board. In the evening return to the Seward harbor. Relax in the evening and enjoy the fresh Alaskan air. Overnight in Seward.

 

Day 4:  Seward to Glennallen/Copper Center / 304 miles

Plan 6 hours driving time, not including stops.

Today you will travel back up the Seward Highway, through the lush Matanuska Valley, an onto the breathtaking Glenn Highway. This is one of the oldest and most scenic highways in Alaska. The Glenn, as it is known by locals, follows the Matanuska River up to its beginning at the Matanuska Glacier. Along the way, there are opportunities for guided glacier hikes and river rafting. This is a perfect day to plan a picnic! Overnight in Sheep Mountain or Glennallen / Copper Center Area.

 

Day 5:  Glennallen/Copper Center to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park / 68 miles

Plan 1.5 hours driving time, not including stops, plus 30 minute flight from Chitina to McCarthy.Kennicott Glacier Lodge
Start the day with a short drive to the small
town of Chitina, where you will leave your rental car and board a bush plane for the scenic flight into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. At 13.2 million acres, Wrangell-St. Elias is the largest national park in the United States and equivalent in size to the country of Switzerland! This tremendous park includes four mountain ranges, nine of the country's 16 highest peaks, and extensive ice fields. Your final destination is the spectacular Kennicott mines overlooking the Kennicott Glacier. Overnight at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge.

 

Day 6:  Kennicott / Wrangell St. Elias National Park
Take a step back in time today on a 2.5 hour historical tour of Kennecott. Your guide will take you inside the 14 story Mill Building of the Kennecott Copper Corporation, which was built in the early 1900s. Catch a glimpse of what it was like to live and work in this remote wilderness, while hearing tales of lucky fortunes, tenacious frontiersmen, and tragic endings. This afternoon, you have plenty of time for an optional guided glacier or alpine hiking tour (not included). Overnight at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge.

 

Day 7:  Kennicott / Wrangell St. Elias National Park to Fairbanks / 313 miles

30 minute flight from McCarthy to Chitina, plus 6 hours driving time, not including stops.

Today begins with a return flight to Chitina. Your drive continues on the Richardson Highway, Alaska's oldest highway which began in 1898 as a gold rush trail to Eagle. This route follows the Alaska oil pipeline, one of the world's greatest engineering feats. Along the way, there are several rest stops, including historic roadhouses and scenic viewpoints. Spend the remainder of the day exploring the historic gold mining town of Fairbanks, also known as Alaska's "Gateway to the Arctic."  We suggest a visit to the University of Alaska Museum of the Arctic and the Musk Ox farm. You have several options for gold panning and gold mine tours such as the El Dorado Gold Mine or the Discover the Gold City Tour (not included). Overnight in Fairbanks.

 

Day 8:  Dalton Highway, Gates of the Arctic Nat’l Park & Anaktuvuk PassGates of the Arctic National Park and Anaktuvuk Pass

Travel far above the Arctic Circle today on a memorable journey to Anaktuvuk Pass. Early this morning (approx. 5am), depart in a comfortable mini coach for a ground tour from Fairbanks across the Arctic Circle to Coldfoot. From here, you will board a small plane for a flight into the heart of the Brooks Range, the northern-most mountains in North America. The plane will land within the Gates of the Arctic National Park at the Nunamiut Eskimo village of Anaktuvuk Pass, nearly 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Visit the village and learn about the culture and lifestyle of the local people. After your visit you will fly back to Fairbanks, arriving at between 6pm or 7pm. Return your rental car at the airport this evening. Overnight in Fairbanks.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: The excursion to Anaktuvuk Pass only operates to approx. Aug 31, depending on weather conditions. If you start this program after Aug 24, you have the option to do a day excursion to Barrow, the top of the world, for only $69 additional per person.

Barrow tour description:
Barrow is
the northernmost city in the United States, 330 miles north of the Arctic Circle. As Alaska's largest Eskimo village, in Barrow knowledge of the environment and animal behavior continues to be essential for day-to-day survival. During the tour witness ceremonies and traditions of the native culture as you tour the Inupiat Heritage Center, a National Park Service Affiliated Site. Take part in local music and dances and learn about the traditional blanket toss. Your tour includes a chance to examine the tundra, search for hundreds of bird species, view the ice of the Arctic Ocean and walk on a beautiful sand beach as far north as you’re ever likely to go.  Throughout you will have a chance to interact with local residents who enthusiastically enjoy sharing their stories and culture. Extra brave guests can join the most prestigious Polar Bear Club in the world by choosing to swim in the Arctic Ocean (optional).

 

Day 9:  Fairbanks to Denali National Park

Transfer via hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi to the Fairbanks rail station. At 8:15am*, depart aboard the Alaska Railroad to Denali National Park. Upon arrival (12pm), you will be met for your wildlife bus tour through Denali National Park to Kantishna. Your experienced driver will provide narration about the history, the fauna and flora of the park as well as stop for any wildlife sightings. With some luck you may see moose, bear, wolves, caribou, Dall sheep and fox. A snack will be provided with your bus transfer. The bus will arrive at the lodge at approx. 8pm. Enjoy dinner and relax at the lodge. Overnight at the Kantishna Roadhouse or Denali Backcountry Lodge. (Snack and dinner included)

Spend the day enjoying a naturalist-led guided hike or walk, panning for gold, mountain biking through the backcountry or flight seeing. In the evening, enjoy a presentation focusing on the local area, read a book from the extensive natural history library, or just relax and share stories from the day. All outdoor activities (except flight seeing) are included. Overnight at the Kantishna Roadhouse or Denali Backcountry Lodge. (All meals included).

 

Day 11:  Denali to Anchorage

Enjoy a light breakfast early this morning before departing at 6am on the bus back to the park entrance. For a truly unique experience, upgrade to a scenic return flight past Mt. McKinley to the park entrance (see Important Notes below). At 12:15pm, depart on the Alaska Railroad to Anchorage. Enjoy spectacular views through large picture windows, visit the gift shop or have a meal in the dining car (not included). Upon arrival in Anchorage (8pm) transfer to your hotel by hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi. Overnight in Anchorage.  (Breakfast included.)

 

Day 12: Anchorage to Brooks Falls / Katmai National Park
Transfer to the Anchorage Airport by courtesy hotel shuttle or taxi. Depart Anchorage at approximately 7:30am aboard a scheduled flight to King Salmon or Kulik. Upon arrival in King Salmon or Kulik, a local representative will transfer you directly to a seaplane for a 20 minute flight to Brooks Camp. On arrival in Brooks Camp, you will meet with park service staff for a brief orientation in bear safety before you check into your overnight accommodation. Spend the remainder of the day exploring Brooks Camp, viewing brown bears from observation platforms, and hiking to Brooks Falls. Overnight at Brooks Lodge.

 

Day 13:  Brooks Falls / Katmai National Park Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes
Today take the guided bus tour to the Valley of 10,000 Smokes.  Katmai was initially established in 1918 following the cataclysmic eruption of Novarupta Volcano in 1912, a blast ten times more forceful than the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. The eruption buried more than 40 square miles with pumice and ash up to 700 feet deep. This area was named the Valley of 10,000 Smokes for the countless fumaroles that continued to steam for many years. Today the Valley is a geologic wonder containing active volcanoes and breathtaking views of deep gorges topped by multi-colored cliffs of volcanic ash. Overnight at Brooks Lodge.

 

Day 14:  Brooks Camp to Anchorage

Spend the morning at Brooks Lodge pursuing your own interests. You may want to take another hike to Brooks Falls, take a few last wildlife photos or visit the "Trading Post" where souvenirs may be purchased. Your return flight to King Salmon will depart early this afternoon (usually after lunch). You arrive back in Anchorage at approximately 4:30 pm. Transfer to your hotel via hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi. The evening is at your leisure. Overnight in Anchorage.

 

Day 15:  Anchorage departure
Depending on your departure flight you may have some free time for some souvenir shopping or additional excursions (not included). Transfer to the airport via hotel courtesy shuttle or taxi. Depart or start an additional program

Accommodation in Kennicott ***: The Kennicott Glacier Lodge was opened in 1987 and is a replica of one of the historic mining buildings from the copper mining boom town days. This "main lodge" building has comfortable rooms with a sink with cold running water. There are plenty of spotlessly clean bathrooms and shower rooms located throughout the lodge for your use.  Baths are "private use", but SHARED by other guests. In 2004 a new (separate) building was added, offering 10 rooms with a private bath.

If you book the STANDARD program, you will be accommodated in the main lodge building in a room with a SHARED bath.
If you book the UPGRADED program, you will be accommodated in the separate building in a room with a private bath. Depending on availability we might only be able to accommodate you in the main lodge in a room with shared bath (you would be notified).

Excursion to the Gates of Arctic National Park (day 8): If you prefer to fly both ways to Anaktuvuk Pass and do not want to travel on the Dalton Highway, please contact us for availability. Price surcharge may apply. Please also see important information under day 8 regarding the operation season of the excursion to Anaktuvuk Pass and optional alternative program to Barrow.

Katmai National Park/Brooks Camp - Bear Viewing: Peak bear viewing at Brooks Falls takes place from late-June through July and again from late-August until mid-September when the salmon are spawning in the Brooks River.  Special viewing platforms located at Brooks Falls and the mouth of the river offer unobstructed, up close bear viewing.

*Scenic flight information: The scenic fly-out from Kantishna to the Denali Park entrance is approximately 55 minutes in duration. The flight takes you past Mt. McKinley, providing amazing views, and is via small bush plane (maximum 5 passengers). The price is $324 per person (based on 2 people) and is refundable if cancelled due to weather.
