About Juneau Alaska

Mendenhall Glacier is located in JuneauJuneau started life originally as a small mining camp. By 1880 it was a boom town as gold fever spread north, and Juneau owes much of its early history to successful gold mining operations in the region. The city is nestled between Mount Juneau and the Gastineau Channels.

Juneau Is the seat of State government and thrives on tourism, with cruise ships stopping in Juneau for cruise shore excursions.  With a population of 30,000 the city is well positioned as a major cruise ship port and is a busy regional center and State Capital. Local sightseeing highlights include the University of Alaska Southeast campus, a fish hatchery and the Mendenhall Glacier, all found on our tours and Alaska cruise excursions.

Juneau is a favorite jumping-off point for the nearby attractions including cruise into Glacier Bay National Park, bear viewing on Admiralty Island and whale watching, in Lynn Canal or to Point Adolphus in Icy Strait. Tours and shore excursions depart daily from Juneau.

Juneau ALaska tour featuring a helicopter tour and glacier trekking

MENDENHALL GLACIER TREK

Glacier Trek **:  $194 per person Tour 327 (Minimum age 12 years)
Glacier Trek with Ice Climb:

$194 person Tour 328 (Minimum age 12 years)

(2 person minimum to operate these tours)
Both tours
takes you to one spectacular site - the Mendenhall Glacier. The trips begin with a 2-mile trail hike through the rainforest along Mendenhall Lake. The hike is moderate to challenging, depending on your physical fitness level. The first mile of the trail is well maintained and goes through forests with a few switchbacks, while the second half of the trail is a little off the beaten path and requires hiking on bedrock with some rock scrambling. Once you reach the glacier, you will be outfitted in trekking gear. With the use of crampons you will enjoy trekking on moderate glacier terrain overlooking Mendenhall Lake. You will have close-up views of ice caves, streams, crevasses and other unique glacial formations. If you prefer the trek with ice climb (Tour 328), your trekking adventure on the glacier will be more challenging. With instructions of your professional guide and use of an ice axe you will explore the glacier on more vertical terrain. Tours include fully certified guides, all necessary gear, roundtrip transportation from Juneau, hearty snack & beverages.

Note: The trips cater to all ages and abilities. However, you must be in good enough shape to hike for up to 5 hours, covering about 6 miles roundtrip. It is important to have sturdy shoes or boots that provide good ankle support while hiking on the rocky terrain. Please note that even if you book the Glacier Trek with Ice Climb, circumstances such as poor weather, inadequate footwear, or a slow pace may limit or prevent the opportunity to ice climb, and you would only do the glacier trek.

Duration: Both tours are 6 hours total including 1.5 hours for local Juneau transfers and gear orientation, 1.5 hours trail hike between trail head and glacier (each way) and about 1.5 hours glacier trekking & ice climbing. ** If you chose not to ice climb, the entire 1.5 hours will be spent glacier trekking.
Departure times: 9am and 1pm. Daily departures: May 1 - October 1, 2008.
