Half-Day Root Glacier Hike Tour from Kennicott
Depart Kennicott on a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920's as a wagon road. Along the way, stops will be made to discuss glaciology and local geology and enjoy spectacular views of the rock-covered Kennicott Glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks. At the base of the Root Glacier, you will strap on crampons and, with simple instruction, begin walking on the glacier. Numerous glacial streams cut deep ravines in the ice, forming shimmering blue pools and waterfalls. After enjoying “lunch with a view” you and your guide start making your way back to the town of Kennecott. This tour will return you to Kennicott in time to relax before dinner or join an optional historic mill tour. Lunch is not included.

NOTE: No experience necessary but participants should be able to hike about 5 miles on uneven terrain.  There is a 2-person minimum for this tour to operate.

Half-Day Root Glacier Hike & Kennecott Tour from Kennicott
Experience the best of Kennicott with this full day combination tour! First enjoy a spectacular half day hike on the Root Glacier, searching for deep crevasses, shimmering blue pools and waterfalls. No experience necessary but participants should be able to hike about 5 miles on uneven terrain. After about 6 hours of hiking, you will return to Kennicott where you will have a short break before stepping back in time on a historic 2.5 hour tour of the old mining town Kennicott. This is the only tour permitted to enter the historic buildings. Meals are not included.

Full-Day Root Glacier Hike from Kennicott
Enjoy all the benefits of the half day hike but with additional time to explore the glaciers dynamic features. After “lunch with a view”, the possibilities are endless. You and your guide may decide to head up the glacier towards the massive 7,000 Stairway Icefall. You may also set your sights to Donoho Falls and the thundering cave it creates as it tunnels its way under the Root Glacier. Either way, this hike is sure to leave you spellbound and eager to share your discoveries for years to come. Lunch is not included.

Ice Climbing Tour from Kennicott
Enjoy an introduction to ice climbing on this tour! The Root Glacier offers the perfect venue for people of all ages and skill levels to participate in this exciting and rewarding sport. After being fitted for your gear, you will hike a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920's as a wagon road. Along the way, stops will be made to discuss glaciology and local geology and enjoy spectacular views of the rock-covered Kennicott Glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks. At the glacier's edge, you will learn how to walk in crampons and then hike to a series of ice cliffs. At the cliff, you will gear up and the experienced guides will teach you several ice climbing techniques. You will spend the day practicing your skills and have the chance to climb several cliffs, staying within your comfort zone. Lunch is not included.

NOTE: No experience necessary but participants should be in good physical condition. Lunch is not included.
