KENNICOTT AND MCCARTHY – ACTIVE TOURS
Depart Kennicott on a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920's as a wagon road. Along the way, stops will be made to discuss glaciology and local geology and enjoy spectacular views of the rock-covered Kennicott Glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks. At the base of the Root Glacier, you will strap on crampons and, with simple instruction, begin walking on the glacier. Numerous glacial streams cut deep ravines in the ice, forming shimmering blue pools and waterfalls. After enjoying “lunch with a view” you and your guide reluctantly start making your way back to the town of Kennecott. This tour will return you to Kennicott in time to relax before dinner or join an optional historic mill tour. No experience necessary but participants should be able to hike about 5 miles on uneven terrain. Lunch is not included. Experience the best of Kennicott with this full day combination tour! First enjoy a spectacular half day hike on the Root Glacier, searching for deep crevasses, shimmering blue pools and waterfalls. No experience necessary but participants should be able to hike about 5 miles on uneven terrain. After about 6 hours of hiking, you will return to Kennicott where you will have a short break before stepping back in time on a historic 2.5 hour tour inside the 14 story Mill Building of the Kennecott Copper Corporation. This is the only tour permitted to enter the historic buildings, including the 14-story Copper Mill. Meals are not included. After being fitted for your gear, you will hike a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920's as a wagon road. At the glacier's edge, you will learn how to walk in crampons and then hike to a series of ice cliffs. At the cliff, you will gear up and the experienced guides will teach you several ice climbing techniques. You will spend the day practicing your skills and have the chance to climb several cliffs, staying within your comfort zone. No experience necessary but participants should be in good physical condition. Lunch is not included.
