This Kodiak Island tour combines bear viewing with an expert pilot guide and exploring Kodiak by car, or on a guided sightseeing excursion.

About 3,000 bears inhabit Kodiak Island, and many more live nearby along the Katmai Coast. The proximity of these two large bear populations make bear viewing on Kodiak Island and the Katmai Coast an ideal Alaska wildlife viewing trip. Kodiak is the second largest island in the U.S. and offers a diverse culture from its first inhabitants, the Alutiiq people reaching back more than 7,500 years ago, to being the first capital of Russian America. Today, Kodiak hosts a significant commercial fishing fleet, and is one of Alaska's great adventure destinations. Kodiak Island lies off the southern coast of Alaska, easily reached from Anchorage.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • As weather can delay the departure or the return flight, please plan extra weather window days after this program!

  • Bear viewing location: Bear Viewing will take place on Kodiak Island or the Katmai Coast, depending on season and food source available for the bears.

  • Bear viewing duration: The flight safari includes approx. 1 - 1.5 hrs flying time, depending on destination. Tour duration approximately 4 hrs total.

  • Requirements/gear for bear viewing: you will need to walk/hike from the plane to bear viewing point (up to 2 miles depending on destination); rubber boots are provided, rain gear is recommended.

  • Season: Best time for bear viewing on Kodiak Island when the salmon is running, which typically is end of June to the end of July - depending on the salmon run even from mid June through mid August. For remainder of summer the pilots fly to the Katmai Coast where bears feed on berries and sightings are not as reliable!

  • Kodiak city tour can be re-scheduled to accommodate changes in flight times due to weather or other circumstances. Guided Kodiak sightseeing tour may be substituted with a compact rental car.

  • Tour length: leave Anchorage at approx. 10am on day 1 and return at approx. 4pm on day 2

  • Cancellations due to bad weather: If 4-hr bear viewing flight safari from Kodiak is cancelled due to weather only this tour component is refundable, NO other services of the package. If flight to Kodiak is cancelled, partial refunds might be possible - ONLY if you contact us immediately!

WHAT TO PACK:

Temperatures from June through August range between 60°F / 16° C to 80°F / 27°. May and September are typically cooler, with temperatures ranging between 45°F / 7° C to 55°F / 13° C. Temperatures in the winter can range from -40 degrees to 40 degrees.

If summer or winter the general rule for Alaska is casual, comfortable clothing that can be worn in layers. The first layer should be something thin and next to the skin (try to avoid cotton). The second layer adds warmth and allows you the option of removing if it gets warmer (mostly fleece or similar). The third layer should protect you against rain and wind if necessary.

For day cruises into Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park, for example, we recommend an extra layer including a scarf, hat and gloves, as it can be chilly on the boats - even in the summer!

Comfortable walking shoes or water repellent hiking boots are also important.

If you visit in the winter, your outer layer should protect you against the cold and wind. Even so jeans are comfortable, they are not ideal when it is really cold. Ski pants are protecting better against the cold weather. Do not forget to bring a warm scarf, hat, gloves, and boots.
