ITINERARY Day 01: Saturday, March 2, 2013 - Race day in
Anchorage Today is the ceremonial start in Anchorage. You will be
a musher handler within the race chute, where you will assist in the handling
of a racing team. One lucky guest will be drawn to be an "Iditarider" and ride
in the sled during the first stretch of the trail! After the race start and
lunch in downtown Anchorage, you will take a scenic ski plane flight over a
nearby glacier before landing at the front door of the hotel. Overnight in
Wasilla.
Day 02: Sunday,
March 3, 2013 - Race Restart / Official start Today's focus is on
the Iditarod Re-start in Wasilla, where you will assist the race by manning a
road crossing on the race trail. While manning the crossing, mushers will pass
by within feet, even inches, of the group. After the last musher passes, you
will have a trailside lunch and then take a snowmobile ride along the trail.
Overnight in Wasilla.
Day 03: Monday, March 4, 2013 - Aerial
Tours Today you will experience Alaska and the Iditarod from the
air! After a breathtaking flight around Mt. McKinley you will land mid-day to
enjoy a trailside lunch prepared by your pilot/guides and watch the mushers
resting as they pass through the Finger Lake checkpoint on their way to Rainey
Pass. Depending on weather, race progress and runway conditions, landings may
be made at Skwentna, Finger Lake and/or Rainey Pass. Overnight in
Wasilla.
Day 04: Tuesday, March 5, 2013 - More Dog
Mushing Today you will be introduced to dog mushing. After a kennel
tour and comprehensive introduction to Alaska's state sport, you will harness
up and drive your own dog team along a groomed trail course. Relax in the
middle of the day with a catered campfire lunch. Overnight in Wasilla.
(Important Note: Days 3 and 4 may be reversed depending on trail and weather
conditions.)
Day 05: Wednesday March 6, 2013 -
Departure After breakfast, you will be transferred back to
Anchorage. Tour concludes.
A night in Anchorage before and
after this tour is recommended. Please book separately. |

TRAVEL TO ALASKA: Please make sure you have your proper documents (US Drivers License or
passport) with you, your credit card and camera/video recorder. If you booked a rental car with us that you will pick up upon arrival in
Alaska, please make sure you provide us with your flight arrival information so
that your car is ready for you when you arrive! Also remember that Alaska has its own time zone. Alaska is 1 hour behind
Pacific Standard Time / 2 hours behind Mountain Standard Time / 3 hours behind
Central Standard Time / 4 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. WHAT TO PACK: Temperatures from June through August range between 60°F / 16° C to 80°F /
27°. May and September are typically cooler, with temperatures ranging between
45°F / 7° C to 55°F / 13° C. Temperatures in the winter can range from -40
degrees to 40 degrees. If summer or winter the general rule for Alaska is casual, comfortable
clothing that can be worn in layers. The first layer should be something thin
and next to the skin (try to avoid cotton). The second layer adds warmth and
allows you the option of removing if it gets warmer (mostly fleece or similar).
The third layer should protect you against rain and wind if necessary.
For day cruises into Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National
Park, for example, we recommend an extra layer including a scarf, hat and
gloves, as it can be chilly on the boats - even in the summer!
Comfortable walking shoes or water repellent hiking boots are also
important.
If you visit in the winter, your outer layer should
protect you against the cold and wind. Even so jeans are comfortable, they are
not ideal when it is really cold. Ski pants are protecting better against the
cold weather. Do not forget to bring a warm scarf, hat, gloves, and boots.
